"one of the two teachers who supervised the excursion put a note on the trip-approval paperwork that was sent to the school superintendent saying those who failed the swim test would be offered swim lessons and one-on-one coaching in the C.W. Jefferys pool. Those students could then repeat the test. The TDSB found that no further swim tests or instruction were provided. " No flagNo flagAllowNo actionChecked

Howe…Richard Benevolus: Thank you for posting the link you use to back up your position on Aquaculture practices, emphasis on sea lice infestations. However, the problem here is two fold. First, your source is by no means unbiased. Just check out their sources of funding (i.e. Commercial Fishing Industry, who stand to lose the most from fish farms, etc.). Secondly, their information is dated with none of it more recent than 10 years ago. I studied Aquaculture for my undergrad degree (Resource Management Administration) but that was 46 years ago (OMG - I'm getting old - sigh) and that information is so outdated as to be almost useless. The problem here is no studies have been done on these specific farmed fish to determine if sea lice is a problem. I mean, did you check out the pic's of the Atlantic salmon posted with this story and see how covered in sea lice they were? Yes, neither did I. This is a field that all but demands current scientific study, and unbiased study at that. No flagNo flagAllowNo actionChecked

You have to be addressed much as the Holocaust deniers in Springfield, except that they don’t make a daily habit of spreading their hate, arrogance, and misinformation in this forum. b) To comment on your posts’ substance, there would have to be substance. As of this writing you have two of the four longest posts in this thread, along with several other posts, even though you do no business with EWEB. You have used many posts in this and other threads to attack the president, mostly for making promises, when he has actually delivered on many of his promises. c) I don’t make “ad hominem” attacks, and I don’t make any attacks “as usual.” Perhaps you should read all of my 1182 contributions on Civil Comments, because the vast majority are not attacks of any kind on you or any other non-public person, before you blow hot air about my “usual” posts. I've been a feminist for most of my 82 years . I can't count my early childhood! I have to tell you that it would be difficult for a practicing catholic to be a true feminist. Such a person would have to support no abortion rights, a ban on contraception, no women priests & a ban on there ever being a female pope. To say that women who support free market capitalism would not be welcome in feminist ranks is untrue & that the same is true for women who work in the energy industry is ridiculous. Many feminists feel aggrieved at times but 'resentful'? Not the ones I know. If you really believe the world is not run by a patriarchy, you should think again. Third world countries are overwhelmingly anti- women - how else do you explain honour killings?, the niqab? We`ve made progress in the west but not enough. As is stated in the article & depending on Trump's pick for the next supreme court justice, American women could lose their abortion rights. No flagNo flagAllowNo actionChecked

The earth and satellite temperatures have been falling even with the known heat islands of cities, where they have removed the 100 rule for measuring temperatures. What would you say to having a weather station ??20 feet from the end of an older jet fighter, does that sound like when the jet engine starts it would influence the temperature? Does to me! Russia has kicked out the Global Elites who wanted to con-trol the country. Hope that the Americans vote in Trump who will remove their influence/ control of the free world. Perhaps you have a link to the story I missed, that spells out the specifics of our purchase of this building? I have not been able to find them. I for one still think it's important for news media to report details on things like this. Sure, citizens should be diligent and do research, but ADN has gone soft on what has been going on with the purchase of this building. Is this really the best time to buy this place? I really would like to know the relevant particulars and think it's important that others learn about them too. No flagNo flagAllowNo actionChecked

Lots of child care workers earn a lot less than $13/hour. I think all child care workers are undervalued and should earn far more than they do, but I don't know many families who can afford to pay significantly more for child care. Infant care in a center costs around $1200 a month now. A big wage hike would push that cost up by hundreds of dollars a month, as the biggest expense most child care centers have is wages. I think we'll see a lot of mothers pushed out of the labor force by the jump in child care costs. Combine the loss of an income with generally higher costs for goods and services, and this minimum wage hike will hit middle class families hard. I have yet to see Kotek or anyone else explain how families are going to manage the increased cost of child care, and I haven't seen anyone in the press ask them to. Near me there's a small country school, just over 100 kids, 8 teachers (plus principal), and almost every one is on fully-paid leave of one kind or another ("stress leave" being the most popular, and apparently it's contagious) - and even a couple of their replacements are now on fully-paid leave too. In some cases a classroom of about 16 kids is costing 3 full-time teachers' salaries, plus benefits and pensions, being paid at once. Now if that's happening all over, no wonder provincial government debt levels are soaring. But the unions love it, and so does the provincial Liberal government which certainly appreciates the teachers' support every election time. No flagNo flagAllowNo actionChecked

They say they adhere to the doctrine of papal infallibility, yet are happy to reject the teaching of a variety of popes concerning the authority of the non-infallible ordinary magisterium." - No doubt the dissenters are in error. - With sympathy; they are in the same position that the early Reformers; who later separated from union with the ArchbRome. The Reformers, seeing a church led by corrupt bishops in Rome, came to accept that when all is not well in the church look to the bishops of rome for the source of the difficulties. - However, in the case of these dissenters, they seriously misread not just Amoris but also traditions of faith in the church. - Council/Trent reinforced the use of the Eucharist as a control lever by clerics over the faithful. In so doing the apostolic tradition of Eucharist as both food and medicine was in effect suppressed. Amoris has turned the bark of Peter back to this ancient tradition. Its green initiatives, which aren’t clearly defined, run up against the priorities of the incoming Trump administration. Its poking Donald Trump in the eye, which hasn’t ceased since the election, has created unclear but likely substantial risks for Canadian exporters.I suspect that the Bank of Canada will take the stronger than expected growth numbers as another reason not to match the US Fed if, as expected, it raises the federal funds rate in December. The 'extrapolation' I did from what had been happening - you will need to look at history books by non-European authors of pre-to-mid 19th century Africa. And you'll need to read several Africa is a huge place- and there is no one book African history that can do it justice. Just like, to get a real sense of Germanic history you can't just read a book of European history. There are some great research on the Bantu empire which spanned most of central Africa up to sometime in the 18th century. The Mali empire which peaked around 1330AD. And of course, down South we had the Zulu empire - still in it's infancy. No flagNo flagAllowNo actionChecked

What, may I ask, does it mean to "support the gay culture??" This sends a clear message to me that GLBT people are not really welcome in the Church. It should come as no surprise that in the U.S., for every one Catholic convert, more than six Catholics leave the church. Taken a step further, Catholicism loses more members than it gains at a higher rate than any other denomination, with nearly 13 percent of all Americans describing themselves as “former Catholics.” I am proud to consider myself among that number. (I also understand the distinction between priests and those in monastic vows. ) I don't think what the Orthodox do or don't do should determine what the RCC should do. Celibacy should be optional., not a requirement. And whether people who want to be priests should marry before or after ordination, I don't see why that is even an issue. As long as they are mature people when they receive either sacrament, why does it matter? No flagNo flagAllowNo actionChecked

The world helped France ensure this country stayed poor by demanding it 'compensate' them for loss of its slaves and its slave colony, to compensate slave owners, and would only recognise it as a sovereign nation if it did. This was with warships standing by...some 150 million francs in *1825*. In modern day dollars Haiti has paid some 21 billion to France. And let's not forget the history of the Dominican Republic and its ongoing disgusting treatment of Haiti. Not sure what the UN is waiting for the sanction this country, who actually got their independence from Haiti not Spain btw. Maybe if people were less ignorant of the history of slavery, the historical effects of white supremacy, they might be less inclined to laugh. And just so no one misunderstands, I think these people crossing illegally into Canada should be processed immediately and sent back to the U.S. or home. No flagNo flagAllowNo actionChecked

Populism can and does arise from both. My concern is that, as citizens, we seek out, encourage, and vote for candidates who are more intelligent, skillful, and better than we are. Just feeling comfortable having a beer with them is a misguided criterion of excellence. We need leaders whom we admire and respect because they are exceptional, not leaders who are cosily "like us." We need leaders who can speak in whole sentences and entire paragraphs, who can grasp complex situations in milliseconds, have integrity, and enter public service unselfishly. The recent US election showed that both parties scraped up candidates whom few could admire for their genius at leadership. What we need, Left and Right, are better candidates everywhere and at every level. We need the best, the wisest, and the most outstanding among us as our representatives -- not Mr and Ms Congeniality. Politics is not a popularity contest; it is a gravely important enterprise.
